In modern workplaces, classrooms, and homes, collaboration tools are no longer optional; they are essential. Traditional magnetic panels and framed whiteboards often fall short because of their limited size, meaning only one person can use them at a time. This reduces efficiency and restricts creativity during team sessions or lessons.

A magnetic whiteboard wall changes this dynamic completely. By transforming an entire wall into a surface that is both magnetic and dry-erase, you gain unlimited space for writing, brainstorming, teaching, or organising. The dual functionality supports better teamwork, saves space, and creates a professional, seamless look in any environment.

This blog will walk you through why magnetic whiteboard walls are a practical solution, how to create one, product alternatives to consider, and tips for ensuring durability and performance.

What Makes Magnetic Whiteboard Walls a Better Choice

Magnetic Whiteboard Walls

A magnetic whiteboard wall offers multiple advantages over standard boards or panels. The most important thing is its unlimited size. Instead of being restricted to a single small frame, you can use the full height and width of your wall. This is particularly valuable in meeting rooms or classrooms where multiple people need access at once.

Another key reason is functionality. Combining magnetic strength with a writable surface means you no longer need two separate tools. You can pin up reports, diagrams, or schedules while writing notes alongside them, creating a more efficient workflow.

From a design perspective, a wall finish looks cleaner and more integrated compared to bulky framed boards. It also allows full customisation; you decide the dimensions and placement based on your room layout. For businesses and schools, this can reduce long-term costs because one installation serves multiple purposes and lasts significantly longer than traditional boards.

How to Make a Magnetic Whiteboard Wall

How to Make a Magnetic Whiteboard Wall

The process of creating a magnetic whiteboard wall is straightforward when you use high-quality products designed for professional performance.

First, measure your wall carefully. Accuracy ensures you purchase the right amount of paint or alternative product and achieve an even finish. Next, prepare the surface. Fill in cracks or holes with decorator’s filler, sand smooth, and remove all dust to create a flawless base.

If your wall is new plaster apply a sealer coat of standard white paint. The next stage is applying magnetic paint. Stir thoroughly and apply three coats for moderate magnetic strength. For a stronger hold, especially if you plan to attach multiple items, up to six coats are recommended. Allow each layer to dry and sand lightly before continuing. To maximise smoothness, you can skim the final layer of magnetic paint with a straight metal edge like a wide filling blade and sand again once dry, then brush away any sanding dust.

Once the magnetic base is complete, prime the magnetic paint with three coats of white primer lightly sanding between the first two coats. Use a high-quality water-based primer such as White Primer to cover the black base evenly. For a white finish, the primer is essential. If you prefer a colored wall, you can paint it with a high-sheen topcoat before applying the clear version of the whiteboard paint.

The final step is applying whiteboard paint. Mix the two components thoroughly, then apply in one-meter sections using a roller. Cover each section evenly, going over it multiple times to ensure consistent application. Check carefully for missed spots before moving on. After five hours, the wall will be touch-dry, but it needs seven days before it can be used fully. Erasability improves over the first month as the coating cures.

With these steps, you will have a professional-grade magnetic whiteboard wall ready to use for collaboration, learning, or organisation.

Glassboard vs Whiteboard – Which One is Best for Your Office? https://smartersurfaces.com/blog/glassboard-vs-whiteboard/ Fri, 22 Aug 2025 06:23:58 +0000 https://dev.smartersurfaces.com/blog/whiteboard-v-glass-dry-erase-boards/

 Glassboard vs Whiteboard

When it comes to modern office environments, writable surfaces play an essential role in driving collaboration, idea generation, and productivity. Whether used for brainstorming sessions, project planning, or presentations, having the right surface can make all the difference. The debate of glassboard vs whiteboard has become increasingly relevant as businesses look for professional, cost-effective, and sustainable solutions.

Glassboards, often praised for their sleek and contemporary design, appeal to companies that prioritize aesthetics. Whiteboards, on the other hand, are valued for their practicality, flexibility, and affordability. With innovative solutions such as Whiteboard Paint from Smarter Surfaces, traditional limitations of framed boards have been eliminated, giving companies the option to create full-wall writable areas.

This guide provides a comprehensive comparison of glassboards vs whiteboards, examining differences in design, usability, durability, and cost. By the end, you’ll have the clarity to choose the best solution for your office.

Difference Between a Glassboard and a Whiteboard

While both surfaces serve the same primary purpose, providing a space for writing and collaboration, they differ significantly in installation, design, and customization. Glassboards are manufactured using tempered glass, making them strong yet heavy. They often require professional installation, as even a small mistake during mounting can compromise safety and functionality.

Whiteboards, in contrast, are more versatile. Traditional framed whiteboards are common, but modern alternatives, such as Whiteboard Paint, allow you to convert any smooth wall, desk, or door into a writable surface. The flexibility of applying whiteboard paint in white or clear finishes also allows integration into any office design. Unlike glassboards, which come in fixed dimensions, painted whiteboards can cover an entire wall, offering far greater scalability.

Limitations of Glassboards in Office Environments

Limitations of Glassboards in Office Environments

Glassboards offer a stylish and premium look, but they do come with certain limitations that must be considered before purchase. Installation and joints in larger surfaces is one of the biggest challenges. Due to their weight, glassboards require multiple people and precise alignment for safe mounting. Incorrect installation can lead to instability or, in rare cases, breakage. Large glassboards are not practicle to transport so for larger surfaces jointed boards cannot be avoid and this is not ideal.

Transporting glassboards is difficult and costly. Even though tempered glass is strong, it can still shatter under impact. This makes moving them between locations inconvenient. Cost is another concern, as glassboards tend to be significantly more expensive than whiteboards or whiteboard paint solutions but they do perform well in terms of ghosting.

For offices seeking functionality and cost savings, these limitations often make glassboards less suitable compared to alternative solutions.

Advantages of Whiteboards and Whiteboard Paint

Advantages of Whiteboards and Whiteboard Paint

Whiteboards remain the most practical choice for offices that prioritize usability and efficiency. Unlike glassboards, they are available in a wider variety of formats, from framed panels to full-wall installations with whiteboard paint. This makes them highly adaptable for different room sizes and business needs.

With Smarter Surfaces Whiteboard Paint, offices can create writable surfaces of any size, transforming standard walls into collaborative spaces. Available in white and clear finishes, it allows seamless integration into both modern and traditional office designs. The paint is easy to apply, requiring just a single coat, and is ready to use within four days.

Durability is another advantage. High-quality whiteboard paints exceed international environmental standards and come with long guarantees, ensuring ghost-free performance over many years at a pricepoint well below glassboards but like for like excluding cost glassboards are more durable. For businesses, this translates into lower replacement costs and uninterrupted productivity.

Fantastic pre-sales support. I was undecided about what to buy and they advised and followed me, even after the sale. I wanted to create an area to hang photos both in the bedroom and in the kitchen, but not excluding the possibility of writing memos or shopping in the kitchen. I bought the magnetic and blackboard paint kit for the kitchen. The final result of the blackboard is fantastic, while the magnetic one is sufficient but not optimal. Maybe I should have done more than three coats of magnetic paint, which is why I recommend getting the super magnetic paint and apart from the chalkboard. The kit is certainly convenient for DIY but not sufficient.
For the rooms for which I bought the super magnetic paint, the result obtained was excellent, just what I wanted. The photos speak for themselves, and we are only at the beginning!
Overall, however, I absolutely recommend the smarter surfaces products. With them I was able to realize the ideas I had in mind and make my son enthusiastic!

Advantages of a White Glass Board

Advantages of a White Glass Board

While clear glassboards can sometimes create visibility challenges due to their transparent nature, white glassboards offer a more practical solution. They provide the same sleek and modern aesthetic of glass while ensuring better contrast for markers. This makes writing more visible, particularly in large meeting rooms.

White glassboards are also durable and present a professional look that appeals to many corporate settings. However, they are still limited in size, as they come in pre-manufactured panels. For businesses that want the design appeal of a white glassboard without its constraints, whiteboard paint can serve as a strong alternative. It delivers the same clean, modern appearance while offering full customization at a lower cost.

Ghosting, Maintenance, and Durability: Glassboard vs Whiteboard

Glassboard vs Whiteboard

One of the most common concerns with writable surfaces is ghosting, the faint marks left behind even after erasing. Glassboards are often marketed as ghost-resistant, but if markers are left on for extended periods, stains can still develop. Regular cleaning is essential to maintain their polished appearance.

Premium whiteboard solutions such as Smarter Surfaces Whiteboard Paint provide a guaranteed ghost-free experience similar to Glassboards. With independent certifications and a 10-year performance guarantee, businesses can rely on consistent, high-quality performance without worrying about staining.

Aesthetics and Functionality in Workspaces

Aesthetics often play a key role in office design decisions. Glassboards are favored for their glossy, frameless design that creates a modern impression. They are often chosen for executive boardrooms or client-facing spaces where design is prioritized.

However, functionality should not be overlooked. Matte Whiteboard Paint from Smarter Surfaces addresses both aesthetic and functional needs by reducing glare, ensuring readability under different lighting conditions, and even doubling as a projection surface. This combination of features makes it highly practical for meeting rooms, classrooms, and offices where presentations and brainstorming sessions are frequent.

The big drawback for glass is the the fact large surfaces will require significant amount of jointed boards.

Magnetic Capabilities Compared

Magnetic Capabilities Compared

Magnetic functionality can enhance collaboration by allowing users to attach notes, charts, and reference documents alongside their writing. Glassboards do offer magnetic options, but the strength is typically weaker and depends on additional accessories.

Whiteboard solutions, on the other hand, can be easily combined with magnetic capabilities. With Magnetic Whiteboard Paint or a combination of Magnetic Plaster with Whiteboard Paint, surfaces gain strong magnetic pull and dry-erase functionality. This dual-purpose solution is particularly useful in offices where planning and brainstorming require both writing and pinned materials.

Cost-Effectiveness and Sustainability: Glassboard vs Whiteboard for Office

Cost is a decisive factor when comparing glassboards and whiteboards. Glassboards come with a high initial price tag, alongside installation and transport costs. Their fixed sizes also mean multiple boards may be required to cover larger spaces, further increasing expenses.

Whiteboards, particularly paint solutions, provide a more cost-effective approach.

By converting an entire wall into a writable surface, businesses achieve more functionality at a fraction of the cost. The long lifespan and low maintenance requirements further enhance their value.

From a sustainability perspective, whiteboard paint reduces the need for paper in brainstorming sessions and minimizes waste associated with replacing traditional boards. This makes it an environmentally responsible choice for companies committed to greener practices as whiteboard paint never goes to landfill where boards at end of life do.

Glassboard vs Whiteboard Paint: Pros and Cons

Glassboard vs Whiteboard Paint

How to Choose Between Glassboard and Whiteboard

How to Choose Between Glassboard and Whiteboard

The decision between a glassboard and a whiteboard depends on your office priorities. If design aesthetics and a premium appearance are your main goals, a glassboard for wall may fit well, particularly in spaces where presentation is key. However, the cost, installation challenges, and size limitations must be factored in.

If your focus is on functionality, cost-effectiveness, and long-term usability, a whiteboard, especially in the form of paint, provides more advantages. It allows you to maximize collaboration space, integrate magnetic and projection features, and maintain a professional look without the high expense of glassboards. For most modern offices, whiteboard paint strikes the right balance between performance and value.

Final Thought

In the glassboard vs whiteboard comparison, both options have their place in professional environments. Glassboards deliver sleek aesthetics and durability but are costly and less flexible. Whiteboards, particularly paint solutions, provide scalability, ghost-free performance, magnetic options, and cost-effectiveness, making them the smarter choice for most offices.

Smarter Surfaces offers a range of whiteboard solutions tailored to office needs, from Whiteboard Paint to Magnetic and Matte finishes. By choosing the right writable surface, you can transform your workspace into a hub of collaboration, innovation, and productivity.

FAQ's

Glassboards are made from tempered glass and require professional installation, while whiteboards are more versatile, cost-effective, and can be customized with paint solutions.

How Medical Schools Can Leverage Antimicrobial Whiteboards https://smartersurfaces.com/blog/antimicrobial-surfaces-in-medical-schools/ Tue, 11 Jun 2024 15:54:20 +0000 https://smartersurfaces.com/?p=79252 In medical schools, hygiene is more than just a suggestion. Proper measures to maintain cleanliness are always a top priority. While regular cleaning and sanitation are vital, antimicrobial surfaces with germ-fighting properties can revolutionize hygiene practices.

Antimicrobial Surfaces in Medical Schools

Imagine whiteboards that actively combat bacteria. Antibacterial paint for walls makes this a reality. They create functional whiteboards that can transform medical schools into safer, more hygienic learning environments.

Stay with us as we explore how medical schools can Leverage the benefits of antimicrobial whiteboards.

Why do you need antimicrobial surfaces in medical schools?

Medical schools face a constant battle against the spread of germs. This heightened risk stems from several factors.

Firstly, medical schools are inherently high-traffic environments. Students, faculty, and staff navigate shared spaces with healthcare facilities throughout the day. This increases the likelihood of contact with pathogens.

Additionally, the nature of medical education often involves close interaction during lectures, group discussions, and clinical simulations. This further facilitates the transfer of germs and highlights the need for antibacterial surfaces for collaboration.

The risks with traditional whiteboards

Traditional whiteboards can easily become breeding grounds for bacteria. Students and instructors frequently touch the board’s surface, further contributing to the spread of pathogens between individuals.

Plus, the porous nature of traditional whiteboard materials can harbor bacteria. This makes thorough disinfection a challenge.

Also, medical students often use whiteboards in their boarding rooms for self-study. They work as a handy tool to visualize and understand complex concepts. Personal whiteboards in student rooms are also extremely useful for group studies and maintaining a packed daily schedule.

However, if students are not careful enough about keeping the writing surface clean and hygienic, it can become a harbor for germs.

This is where the antibacterial paint for walls comes into play. It can help you battle the hygiene risks posed by traditional whiteboards.

Tips for antimicrobial whiteboard usage in clinical teaching

Antimicrobial whiteboard paint can eliminate the limitations of traditional whiteboards. They make teaching more engaging, easy to grasp and remember without the risk of spreading germs. Here’s how teachers can best use it,

  • Don’t be limited by space: Whiteboard paint can convert the whole wall or any smooth surface into a functional whiteboard. No need to write ineligible small texts to fit all the information. With whiteboard paint, there’s always enough space to match your teaching needs.
  • Avoid dead time: Writing long tables or charts on the board takes time and it can become boring for the medical students. Create complex charts and tables on the whiteboard before the class so that you can start teaching right away.
  • Use multiple colors: Colored markers make complicated concepts easier to present and understand. Use them on the antimicrobial whiteboard surface to make the topic more engaging and easier to decipher.
  • Don’t worry about ghosting: Our antibacterial paint for walls used in designing whiteboards in medical schools creates a no-ghosting writing surface. Meaning once you erase the board no stains or ghost lines are left behind that can make fresh writing difficult to read.
  • Use it as a shared space: Instead of using the whiteboard just to note down information, use it as a collaborative space. Ask the students to share their knowledge, and fill in particular sections or information pieces on the whiteboard. It can be an excellent platform for group activities too. This will make your classes more interactive and engaging.

However, to enjoy the full range of benefits of antimicrobial surfaces in medical colleges, it’s vital to choose the right product. Here are the major considerations.

Considerations to choose the right antimicrobial whiteboard paint

  • The paint should be certified to kill a broad spectrum of bacteria. It must be effective against common disease-causing germs like MRSA, MSSA, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, E.coli, Enterococcus, Saccharomyces, and others.
  • It should be easy to apply, clean, and maintain. Minimum downtime and hassle-free application should be a top priority. Look for a product that’s resistant to medical-grade cleaning agents and can be cleaned with a regular dry or slightly damp cloth.
  • The antimicrobial whiteboard paint should be safe for use around people. A paint that has low VOC, is free from solvent and isocyanates, is a safe option.
  • The paint should come with a long enough guarantee for complete peace of mind.

Our antimicrobial whiteboard paint is registered for use by the EU Biocidal Products Directive, exceeds all US environmental standards, and packs a 10-year long guarantee with heavy-duty industrial-grade use. How Modern Industrial Whiteboards Benefits Manufacturing Companies https://smartersurfaces.com/blog/industrial-whiteboards-in-manufacturing/ Fri, 07 Jun 2024 14:57:33 +0000 https://smartersurfaces.com/?p=79238 We can safely say, in today’s dynamic manufacturing units, better communication is the key to productivity. A central space to share information, visualize processes, and brainstorm solutions — is what every manufacturing facility needs. Industrial whiteboards are the most common solutions for the task.

However, the traditional models have their limitations. Limited space, ghosting, and maintenance hassle are just a few on a long list. Thankfully, now there’s an innovative solution — the whiteboard paint.

In this blog, we will delve into how you can design a durable and expansive industrial dry erase board with whiteboard paint. We will also take a look at how our customers are using it in their manufacturing facilities. But, first let’s start with why a traditional whiteboard isn’t the best solution for your needs.

Industrial whiteboards in factory

Drawbacks of traditional industrial whiteboards

Traditional industrial whiteboards often fall short in a manufacturing setup. Here’s a closer look at some of the associated challenges:

Limited space and inflexibility
Traditional industry whiteboards come in predefined sizes. Imagine trying to map out an intricate production flow on a whiteboard half the size needed. It’ll limit communication and stall effective brainstorming. Plus, regular whiteboards are fixed installations. If you need a specialized grid system for a specific production process or want to dedicate a designated area for project updates — traditional models simply can’t adapt to it.

Inadequate service
A common problem with traditional whiteboards is ‘ghosting’. It happens when marker residue leaves faint shadows even after erasing. This reduces readability and creates a cluttered visual that’s difficult to decipher. Imagine trying to decipher crucial information amidst a sea of faint marker ghosts. That’s not exactly ideal for quick and clear communication.

Expensive and high maintenance
Large-scale installation of traditional industrial dry erase boards is expensive. Besides, keeping a traditional whiteboard in pristine condition isn’t easy. Regular maintenance and frequent refurbishing will add to the expenses over the years.

These limitations impact the effectiveness of traditional whiteboards. But fear not, there’s a game-changing solution on the horizon.

Upgrade industrial space with modern whiteboards

Industrial whiteboard paint offers a modern alternative to traditional whiteboards. Unlike their bulkier counterparts, industrial dry erase board paint lets you create expansive collaborative surfaces tailored to your needs.

Here’s how whiteboard paint addresses the drawbacks of traditional models:

No space limitations
With whiteboard paint, space limitations are a thing of the past. You can turn any smooth surface — a wall, a glass partition, or even the back of a wooden door into a functional whiteboard. There’s no size limitation. Your whiteboard can be as compact or as big as you want.

Maximum flexibility
Painted whiteboards for industrial use offer maximum flexibility. You are free to create a specialized grid system or add some extra area for project updates anytime you need. Paint a lightweight partition and use it as a transferable whiteboard.

Our whiteboard paint also comes in a clear variant allowing complete color customization to match any setup. Magnetic Whiteboard Paint can also be used in industrial spaces. We offer two variants: white and clear. In addition to writing, one can post important notes on a magnetic whiteboard wall in the factory or manufacturing setup.

High durability and performance
Industrial dry erase board paint boasts a long-lasting formula. It resists ghosting and maintains a smooth, erasable surface for years. No more battling faint marker shadows. The whiteboard will stay crisp and clear, ensuring effective communication over time. Our whiteboard paint comes with a 10-year guarantee and delivers commercial-grade performance. It doesn’t yellow or flake over time and you get maximum value for money.

Easy application and maintenance
Our whiteboard paint is a DIY-friendly solution. You can apply it without professional help. Just follow the steps elaborated in the manual. The painted whiteboard needs no upkeep. Whiteboard paint surfaces are incredibly easy to clean and maintain. A simple wipe down with a damp cloth will restore the surface to pristine conditions.

Cost-effective solution
Compared to large-scale installations of pre-made industrial whiteboards, whiteboard paint offers a budget-friendly option. Besides, it delivers unparalleled service and flexibility. You also save on installation costs and maintenance.

Industrial whiteboard paint creates a more efficient and engaging work environment. Several well-known engineering and manufacturing companies like Waltz Engineering, Inc., Wanner Hydra-Cell, and Vista, are already using our whiteboard paint in their workspaces. Let’s find out how they are using it.

What are some common uses of modern industrial whiteboards in manufacturing?

Whiteboard paint creates a versatile and dynamic platform for communication and collaboration. Here are some of the most common uses in manufacturing settings:

  • Production planning and scheduling: Extensive whiteboard space allows for detailed mapping of production lines. This helps in highlighting bottlenecks, and optimizing workflows. The freedom to create dedicated sections for Kanban boards or Gantt charts makes it perfect for production management. A visual representation of project timelines, resource allocation, and milestones makes planning simpler.
  • Inventory management and tracking: You can use specific areas on the board to track inventory in real time. This helps in stock management and prevents shortages during production. Use the whiteboard to plan and visualize material usage. Or for streamlining supply chain management without being restricted for space.
  • Quality control and improvement: Expansive industrial whiteboards are ideal for tracking defects. It can help to identify trends and implement corrective actions. They are instrumental in implementing and maintaining workplace organization.
  • Communication and collaboration: Industrial dry erase boards provide a central space for team meetings. This allows for real time information sharing and collaborative decision-making. They are excellent to streamline shift handovers, ensuring clear communication and avoiding information gaps. The space can be used for performance tracking and motivation too.
  • Training and learning: Whiteboards are ideal for visually explaining critical processes, procedures, or safety protocols during training. Use them to encourage new ideas and facilitate brainstorming for improvement or innovation. Also posts important notes on magnetic whiteboard.

By implementing modern whiteboards for manufacturing plants strategically, manufacturers can design a more collaborative, visually engaging, and efficient work environment.

Whiteboard Paint Vs Chalkboard Paint – Choosing the Right One https://smartersurfaces.com/blog/whiteboard-paint-vs-chalkboard-paint/ Thu, 17 Aug 2023 03:50:55 +0000 https://dev.smartersurfaces.com/blog/whiteboard-walls-v-chalkboard-walls/ Deciding to modify your workspace into an innovative working and learning environment is the first step. The second is the decision of whiteboard paint vs chalkboard paint.

With such a wide range of products available, it can be difficult to know which will suit you best. Do you go with a modern whiteboard finish or maybe a retro chalkboard look?

Usage and Sizing

Whiteboard paint gives you more freedom than traditional whiteboards as there are no size restrictions with borders surrounding your surface.

You can create a writable surface with a white finish that blends into your office surroundings when it’s not in use. This means you can have the addition of a writable surface with little impact on the appearance of your workspace.

With chalkboard paint, chalkboard surfaces no longer solely belong in outdated classrooms. They are now frequently seen in modern offices, restaurants and many other businesses.

Our Chalkboard Paint is so versatile it can be used in any location and suit any need. The matt black finish makes it stand out when not in use, making it a new focal point of your space. Explore our chalkboard surface products to find the option that best suits your space and style.

Using whiteboard and chalkboard paint gives you limitless potential for the size of your writable surface. Some of our customers have transformed entire rooms with our paint, creating endless space for creativity.

Application

Creating a whiteboard or chalkboard wall with our products means there is no drilling involved. The product is painted directly to the wall of your choice (after your wall has been primed and prepped). You can carry out this process yourself or with the help of a professional.

Once you have primed your wall, apply the paint. We advise using a separate brush to the one used to apply the primer. For whiteboard paint, we recommend rolling over the surface ten times during the coat to ensure optimum results. The chalkboard paint should be applied with a foam roller.

It will require two coats of paint (allowing for approximately 2 hours drying time between coats)

A step by step application video for our products can be found on our website to help with the installation process. This page also gives more inspiration on how to use your smart surface.

Cleaning Your Surface

Looking after your surface, whether it be a whiteboard or a chalkboard wall, is important to get the most of your product.

Clean your whiteboard wall daily with a cleaning spray to avoid the potential of ghosting and appearance of dirt on your surface. If you accidentally use a permanent marker on your wall, don’t worry. Our Permanent Ink Remover Spray will remove it straight away.

Your chalkboard paint surface can be easily cleaned with a microfiber eraser cloth. It is common for a chalky residue to remain when cleaning your board with a dry cloth or eraser. To prevent this, dampen your cloth to remove this dusty residue.

Whiteboard Paint vs Chalkboard paint

Location

The layout and lighting of your room are important when deciding between a whiteboard wall and a chalkboard paint wall.

If the room you’re planning on putting a writable surface into is small, you should consider installing a whiteboard wall. The light colour will brighten the room and not make it appear any smaller. If you want to keep the current colour of your workspace clear whiteboard paint can be painted over the existing paint.

A chalkboard wall is a perfect addition to a café or restaurant to give it a more authentic and rustic feel. You can use your chalkboard wall as a statement decoration piece with different drawings or as a unique menu display.

A chalkboard wall can also be used in the home for kids to get creative with or as a reminder wall in your kitchen for everyone to use.

Chalkboard paint

Glare

As mentioned above, location is important when deciding between a whiteboard surface or a chalkboard surface. You might be placing your board in a very sunny room.

Rather than whiteboard paint, you would be better using a low sheen wall covering to reduce the risk of glare. A low sheen option will eliminate glare caused by the sun or any other bright light such as a projector.

A chalkboard wall may be your best option if the room gets a lot of natural light. As chalkboard paint is black it won’t reflect light as much a whiteboard paint does.

Using tables with self adhesive films as learning tools

Allergies

Chalkboards are known for having a lot of chalky residues. Despite being able to remove this dust with a damp cloth, if you suffer from asthma or are prone to allergic reactions you should consider a whiteboard wall as an alternative writable surface.

A whiteboard wall means there is no need for chalk, just makers. There are a couple of alternatives to chalkboards. Alternatively, if you have an old chalkboard you wish to refurbish, just simply clean your board and apply the Smart Self-Adhesive Whiteboard Film to upgrade your board to a dry-erase surface.

Ways Whiteboard Walls Are Different To Whiteboards https://smartersurfaces.com/blog/whiteboard-walls-different-whiteboard/ Thu, 17 Aug 2023 03:40:12 +0000 https://dev.smartersurfaces.com/blog/whiteboard-walls-different-whiteboard/ Man drawing on office whiteboard surface created with smart whiteboard wallpaper during meeting

So you want to make your very own whiteboard surface in your office or learning space, but how do you do it? Do you choose a traditional whiteboard or opt for whiteboard walls instead?

But what makes whiteboard walls different to a traditional whiteboard? Don’t they have the same functionality?

In reality both surfaces are totally different. In fact there are even a number of different products to choose from when creating whiteboard walls.

Keep reading below and check out some of the differences between whiteboards and whiteboard walls and how you can create them. You can find the best product for your meeting room, home office, classroom or any working area. Your whiteboard wall, your way.

Whiteboard Walls Can Be As Large Or As Small As You Want

When it comes to size you could find no two different surfaces than a dry erase wall and regular dry erase boards. Depending on how large your space is you may be considering a large whiteboard surface or a small whiteboard surface and want to find the product that best suits your needs.

Whiteboards are available in select sizes which does mean you can be restricted in how much writing space you can install.

If you wanted to create an even bigger whiteboard surface you would need to cover your wall in multiple whiteboards, which would not look great and would be very expensive.

However this structured size may benefit users who are looking to only add writable functionality to select areas in their office or learning space.

Alternatively you could always opt for whiteboard walls instead.

There are plenty of products to choose from to create whiteboard walls in your space. The two we will be discussing in this post are Whiteboard Paint and Whiteboard Wallpaper. With either of these products, you can transform entire walls into whiteboards.

They are both installed directly onto the surface so you won’t need to worry about chunky framing or taking up additional office space. Your whiteboard walls can be as large or as small as you like.

Whiteboard Walls Are Easy To Create

When creating a writable surface you may also want to know how long each option takes to install. Depending on how much time you can dedicate to the application of your whiteboard surface this may help you determine which product is the best one for you.

Whiteboards have a slower application process, usually requiring a professional installer to mount the board at a straight angle on the wall and firmly attach it. This will often leave your wall with holes and screws were you ever to remove the product.

Maybe you want something applied in a hurry? Then choose Smart Whiteboard Wallpaper and create a complete whiteboard wall. It‘s ready to use as soon as the vinyl over vinyl adhesive or Smart Vinyl Adhesive is dry, (typically 24 hours,) so you can start enjoying all the benefits the very next day.

Maintaining A Whiteboard Wall Can Be Easier Than Maintaining A Regular Whiteboard

How does each whiteboard product hold up over time? Do whiteboard walls last as long as a whiteboard does? Well, it can last longer.

To maintain a traditional whiteboard, you will need to avoid leaving marks on the board for longer than 24 hours. You should also regularly clean it with a high quality whiteboard spray such as this one here.

With whiteboard walls things can be easier. Smart Whiteboard Wallpaper creates non-ghosting surface. This means that you won’t have to worry about markers staying on your wall and getting dirty. Once you wipe it away, your whiteboard wall will look good as new.

You Can Have Whiteboard Walls In Any Color You’d Like!

Maybe you want a whiteboard surface in a different color than white, which option should you go for?

Some traditional whiteboards on the market come in a variety of colors, but they are usually more limited in size and aren’t usually targeted towards an office market. This means you could be very limited in usable space.

By using Smart Whiteboard Paint in Transparent, you can paint it over a wall that is the color of your choice – or even on top of a wallpaper. This means you can have whiteboard walls in any color you want.

Take a moment to decide: What do you think? Which option is the right one for you? Consider size of your whiteboard working area, color, and no ghosting before you make your final decision.

What Markers Should You Use on Your Whiteboard Surface? https://smartersurfaces.com/blog/markers-for-whiteboard-surface/ Thu, 17 Aug 2023 02:50:30 +0000 https://dev.smartersurfaces.com/?p=75345 What whiteboard markers to use

One of the questions we are frequently asked about regarding whiteboard surfaces is how to avoid ghosting? So let’s focus on ghosting in this blog post : which whiteboard markers should you choose for writing on your whiteboard surface? Whether its whiteboard paint, whiteboard wallcovering or whiteboard sheets.

Choose Quality Branded Whiteboard Markers

We strongly recommend you choose only quality branded whiteboard markers. Well known high quality brands such as Bic, Edding, Artline and Stedler are reliable.

Whilst you may save money buying cheaper markers (with unrecognisable brands or those which have been cheaply made), you will not save money in the long-term. The money you might save from cheaper markers, you will surely spend on whiteboard cleaning solutions such as whiteboard cleaning spray or wipes.

Keep your whiteboard clean with Smarter Surfaces cleaners

Avoid Ghosting At All Costs

Our approach would be to avoid ghosting, rather than having to deal with it at all.

How to Keep Your Whiteboard Surface White

When you start using your whiteboard surface, clean it at the end of every day for the first month. (This applies in particular to our award-winning Smart Wall Paint. Why? after application, this specialist coating continues to cure for the first month).

For daily cleaning, use an everyday cleaner like Smart Whiteboard Spray or another trusted brand. For heavy usage or for a good monthly clean, use a heavier duty cleaner such as Smart Whiteboard Spray Pro or Permanent Marker Remover. It is important to note that you should not use the Pro spray as a daily cleaner as it could damage your surface over prolonged daily use.

Use soft cleaning cloths such as microfibre cloth. Do not use materials that might scratch your surface.

No Tape!

Do not use Sellotape or other adhesive backed materials on your whiteboard painted surface. When removed, these might remove some of the whiteboard paint with them. Unless you paint over the gap, this area will not be wipe-able. Some users might unwittingly write on it, and then you will be stuck with a marker stain that you cannot remove.

Gloss Levels

One final tip. In theory, the glossier the whiteboard surface is, the easier it should be to wipe-off and keep clean. There is a trade-off between gloss levels and erasability. Some people love a modern, glossy surface. Others prefer a matt finish. Its really a matter of personal choice.

No More Ghosting!

Purchase best quality markers, plus an everyday cleaning spray, and a heavy-duty cleaner for stubborn stains. Check out our bundled accessories for whiteboard surfaces and user kit for magnetic writable surface

If you follow these simple tips, you can avoid ghosting. Its all about prevention rather than a cure!

Explore Whiteboards options of Smarter Surfaces: Whiteboards, Whiteboard Paint, and Dry Erase Wall Coverings https://smartersurfaces.com/blog/dry-erase-wall-paint-v-wallpaper/ Thu, 17 Aug 2023 02:15:58 +0000 https://dev.smartersurfaces.com/blog/whiteboard-paint-v-dry-erase-wallcovering/ A woman and a man are problem solving while working together on dry erase whiteboard wall.
Whiteboard dry erase wallcovering collaboration walls business office

In this blog we are going one step further and comparing all three products at once. We will be looking into attributes such as sizing, application, appearance and product maintenance.

This post aims to help you make an informed decision on which product will be the best option for your surface.

Difference between Whiteboards, Whiteboard Paint and Dry Erase Wallcovering

Sizing

The size of the area you want to cover can largely impact which whiteboard product might be the best choice for you.

Our whiteboard paint or wallpaper products allow you to create an unlimited whiteboard / dry erase area.

Whiteboards are usually limited in size. Our products are more about transforming an entire wall or room into an engaging space. If you want only a smaller working area, traditional whiteboards might be more suitable for you.

  • Smart Whiteboard Paint comes in a variety of sized kits ideal for covering anything from a small surface to an entire room. Kits sizes are currently available in 2m2, 6m2, 12m2, 18m2 and 34m2.
  • Smart Dry Erase Wallcovering is available in rolls of 10m². Each roll measures 1.22m x 8.25m and multiple rolls can be purchased for larger surface areas.

Traditional whiteboards are usually available in small sizes and if you wanted to cover an entire wall you would have to apply multiple whiteboards which would not look great nor would it be cost effective.

Application
If you can paint, you can paint a whiteboard area with our whiteboard paint!

Smart Whiteboard Paint is applied in just five simple steps. The covered surface can then be used seven days after application as it requires curing time. Watch the application video for Smart Whiteboard Paint.

For a more time sensitive application choose Smart Dry Erase Wallcovering. This will be ready to use as soon as the wallpaper adhesive is dry – typically within 24 hours, meaning you can start enjoying the advantages of the surface the very next day.

The usual methods of installing whiteboards consists of a professional being required to mount the board at a straight angle, before ensuring it is firmly attached to the wall.

It is then forever fixed to the wall until it’s removed, leaving holes or screws in the surfaces.

Appearance

Smart Whiteboard Paint, once applied, has a glossy finish on the surface. It can be applied seamlessly into any room, as when not in use, it looks little different from regular white paint.

Smart Dry Erase Wallcovering has a high gloss finish. Like Smart Whiteboard Paint, it is applied directly onto the wall or which is used on the wall meaning it creates a smooth surface. It also does not appear clunky like regular whiteboards but can instead make a room look bigger. If you are looking a low sheen version, check out Smart 2 in 1 Wallcovering: Projector and Dry Erase. Check out our innovative wallcovering solution. Or our creative wallcovering, projectors and solutions are your answer.

Traditional whiteboards are usually coated with a metal/plaster border. They can appear bulky and usually comprise of the whiteboard and a chunky frame. This can in some cases also be a health and safety hazard, especially for locations like classrooms or schools as there can be the risk of the whiteboard falling off the wall.

Colour

Smart Whiteboard Paint, unlike whiteboards and our whiteboard wallcoverings , is available in both white and clear shades. The clear version means it can be applied on top of any paint colour on your wall (except white) . It can even be applied on top of wallpaper or a digital print. This provides you with the ability to create a dry erase surface in any colour and any size you choose. Smart Dry Erase Wallcovering is also currently only available in white.

There are some traditional whiteboards available on the market that are available different colours. However these whiteboards are usually very small in size, usually a maximum of 2m2.

Maintenance

Both Smart Whiteboard Paint and Smart Dry Erase Wallcovering can be maintained in good condition by using them alongside high quality whiteboard markers. We offer a range of these along with a variety of sprays to help you make the most of your surface.

In order to maintain a whiteboard, you would need to regularly remove any marker on the board, leaving them on preferably for no longer than 24 hours. You will also need to regularly clean your board with high quality whiteboard spray, however this may be more difficult with stubborn stains.

A group of people sitting at an office table which has been painted with clear whiteboard paint and they are writing on the table with whiteboard markers problem solving.

Environmental

Smart Whiteboard Paint, unlike many standard paints, is a low VOC product meaning it is solvent free and not harmful to the environment.

Smart Dry Erase Wallcovering, as it is a wallpaper, has no VOC and therefore does not bring any toxins into the environment. This means it can be easily applied with people in the area.

Traditional whiteboards are non-biodegradable which means they do not break down over time. When removed from the wall they are sent to landfills and can not be recycled. Overall they have a negative impact on the environment.

Health and Safety

Health and safety should also be taken into account when deciding what product best suits your needs.

Traditional whiteboards can either be installed onto a wall or wheeled about from classroom to classroom. There can unfortunately be a number of safety risks that can occur with these. If the whiteboard is in correctly installed this could result in injury if the whiteboard were to fall off. Similarly if the whiteboard is being moved around from place to place this could result in collisions if the person can not see what is ahead of them.

As Smart Whiteboard Paint and Smart Dry Erase Wallcovering are applied directly onto the wall there is no fear of similar accidents occurring.
